चील, श्येन कुल, फैमिली फैलकोनिडी (Family falconidae), का बहुत परिचित पक्षी है, जिसकी कई जातियाँ संसार के प्राय: सभी देशों में फैली हुई हैं। इनमें काली चील (Black kite), ब्रह्मनी या खैरी चील (Brahminy kite), ऑल बिल्ड चील (Awl billed kite), ह्विसलिंग चील (Whistling kite) आदि मुख्य हैं।
चील लगभग दो फुट लंबी चिड़िया है, जिसकी दुम लंबी ओर दोफंकी रहती है। इसका सारा बदन कलछौंह भूरा होता है, जिसपर गहरे रंग के सेहरे से पड़े रहते हैं। चोंच काली और टाँगें पीली होती हैं।
बाज, बहरी आदि शिकारी चिड़ियों से इसके डैने बड़े, टाँगें छोटी और चोंच तथा पंजे कमजोर होते हैं। चील उड़ने में बड़ी दक्ष होती है। बाजार में खाने की चीजों पर बिना किसी से टकराए हुए, यह ऐसी सफाई से झपट्टा मारती है कि देखकर ताज्जुब होता है।
यह सर्वभक्षी तथा मुर्दाखोर चिड़िया है, जिससे कोई भी खाने की वस्तु नहीं बचने पाती। ढीठ तो यह इतनी होती है कि कभी कभी बस्ती के बीच के किसी पेड़ पर ही अपना भद्दा सा घोंसला बना लेती है। मादा दो तीन सफेद या राखी के रंग के अंडे देती है, जिनपर कत्थई चित्तियाँ पड़ी रहती हैं।
